How To Prevent Grease Build Up

Fats, oils, grease, and grit are fatal to your drain pipes just as cholesterol is to your arteries. It slowly builds up over time until one day your home is backed up. Remember, prevention is not only easy to do, but can save you a lot of money in the long run!

Grease buildup is one of the primary causes of a blocked house drains, sewer and septic lines. While some of it comes from meat fats, such as bacon and hamburger grease, it also comes from foods such as cooking oil, mayonnaise, butter, sauces, and table scraps. When the FOGG is hot and in liquid form it may appear harmless so most people think that running hot water down the sink helps to dissolve the grease. However, as the liquid cools, the FOGG solidifies and floats to the top of the other liquid in the pipes and all the hot water does is push the #grease just a little further down the pipes. Over time, that grease will build up in the drain and sewer lines. The flow of wastewater becomes restricted and can cause a backup or overflow. The gritty particles, including coffee grinds, eggshells, aquarium gravel, grain, rice, seeds, etc. get trapped in the greasy buildup, accelerating the problem rapidly.

The key to preventing this problem is becoming conscience of what is going down your drains.

  1. Always scrape cooking grease and oils into a disposal container (many people use a coffee can), rather than pouring it down the drain. Remove remaining grease with a paper towel, and dispose of it in a waste basket as well.
  2. Don't put meat or greasy food in the garbage disposal. Disposals my chop the food into bits, but it does not do anything to eliminate the grease.
  3. Keep strainers in your sink to catch solids, and empty them into the trash can.
  4. Have your #plumbing regularly inspected by Michal J. Messick Plumbing Heating and A/C. They have cameras to send down the drain lines. If they spot a problem, they can clear it before it causes a backup.

These simple tips is all it takes to keep grease from clogging your pipes, and preventing a costly sewer line backup in your home.
